For the most part, the house is in great structural shape, but hasn't been cosmetically updated in a LONG time. It’s a superior material that’s resistant to even the heaviest wear and tear, and it looks better painted than just about anything you can find on the market.Last fall, DH and I bought a 1906 farmhouse that was built and owned by the same family since the beginning. While we’ll always work at the pleasure of our clients, at Michelle Tanner Homes, we opt to go with plaster walls whenever possible. Though plaster does tend to be a bit more expensive than drywall, because we work a great deal with one of the top plasterers in the state, the price difference isn’t as significant as if you were just commissioning a plaster job yourself. It’s a material that takes paint really well and provides your home with a beautiful, smooth finish that offers the perfect backdrop to the rest of your interior decoration. Its life span can be measured in centuries, and it offers a high-quality finish unlike any other product on the market. Plaster is decidedly a higher quality product than drywall. If the kids are in the basement with their friends, or if your spouse likes to watch tv at a high volume, you won’t have to worry about them disturbing you in another room. Because it’s thicker and less porous, sound can’t travel through it quite as easily, which gives your home a more peaceful environment. Plaster is also much more effective at muffling sound than drywall. Because we work to offer our clients only the highest quality products, we always go with plaster walls over drywall. Plaster is the most durable wall finish on the market today, and it can stand up to just about anything you or the kids throw at it. And if you have kids in sports, you know how often pucks, soccer balls, and footballs hit the wall. We often build homes for families with children, or for grandparents who take care of the grandkids often. Now that you know the difference between plaster and drywall, why do we at Michelle Tanner Homes prefer plaster over drywall? Here are just a few reasons: Durability ![]() This means you need to have someone working on your home’s install who’s comfortable working with plaster, and knows what they’re doing. It takes a bit of effort to put up, which can mean greater labor costs, and it takes longer to dry as well. ![]() The downsides of plaster do come primarily with installation. There’s not a lot that can bring it down, and additionally, it produces a high end finish that looks gorgeous and is easy to paint. The obvious benefit, then, is plaster’s extreme durability. In fact, the tombs of Egyptian rulers used to feature plaster walls, many of which are still standing today. Plaster has been used for wall finishing since the times of ancient Egypt. Drywall’s life span can be measured in decades, and while it’s a great product, it’s something that you can put holes in with enough force, and there are common complaints of nails popping out over time. It’s a wonderful product of technological advancement that allows for builders to get homes up much quicker these days, but it’s not as durable, nor as soundproof as something like plaster. ![]() From there, the drywall installer will use a joint compound to fill in cracks between separate boards of drywall, and to essentially glue the board to the floor and ceiling. Drywall, which is manufactured in factories to be a very thin, strong board made out of gypsum sheets, is nailed to the wood framing of a home. Here’s everything you need to know about drywall and plaster, and why Michelle Tanner Homes opts for plaster whenever we can:ĭrywall has quickly become an easy commodity and a very fast way to build a home. So, we thought we’d outline some of the differences between the two materials in a blog, to give homeowners a better idea of what the deal is with products. Since so many people have switched to drywall these days, and plaster is becoming less and less common, we often get questions about why we still use plaster. Here are Michelle Tanner Homes, we tend to use plaster walls in our homes, rather than drywall. ![]()

The poisonous gas used during the First World War can now be purified with a g as mask to protect people from their effects, but this was not always the case. Using gas as a chemical weapon was designed to disable the enemy, provoke withdrawal, as well as demoralize and weaken the soldiers by inflicting psychological pains. Indeed, the chemical compound was used by both sides and caused huge physical pains (burns, asphyxia, blindness, skin reactions, breathing system infections and death). WW1 chemical weapons effectsįrom 1914, different chemical weapons used – such as tear gas – released harmful substances that would cause irritations (particularly eye pain), temporary disability, internal and external lesions and could also lead to death. This kind of weapons caused more than 90,000 deaths during the conflict. It is estimated that more than 130,000 tons of chemical weapons were used during WW1. Starting in July 1917, the mustard gas used by the Germans – and then re-synthesized by the French army – caused many casualties on both sides of the front lines until the end of the war.Īll along the First World War, hydrogen cyanide, arsine, bromine, chlorine, phosgene and other chemical elements composed increasingly deadly chemical weapons. In 1916 French shells filled with phosgene provoked heavy losses in German trenches. In September 1915, France launched their first massive gas assault using shells filled with carbon disulfide (highly toxic at high concentration, this product rapidly lost its effectiveness once dispersed in the air). German chemists pursued their researches and conceived a new bromine based substance. In May 1915, assaults using phosgene, chlorine and carbon monoxide mixtures caused more than 600 deaths on the Russian front. And providing a WW1 gas mask to every soldier became a priority. Following this date, research and usage of chemical weapons increased from both sides of the front line. The gas cloud intoxicated about 15,000 soldiers and this chemical attack caused more than 1,000 deaths. Over 150 tons of pressured chlorine were released and drifted to Allied trenches. Yet, on April 22nd 1915 in Flanders and particularly in the Ypres area, Germany launched the first large scale gas attack. This German attack failed because of the very cold temperature on the Polish front which stifled gas spreading and effects. The escalation of the chemical war is launched in 1915 with the use on East front of gas shells on January 31th. For its part, Germany used its chemical industry to develop weapons with chlorine. WW1 chemical weaponsįrom the beginning of the First World War, chemical weapons were used: in August 1914, the French army used new grenades filled with tear gas (actually created for the Parisian police). Thus the conception of an efficient WW1 gas mask was extremely important. Despite the signature of the Hague Convention in 18, France, Germany and many other countries did not stop their research and did not give up on using these weapons during the First World War. In the early 20th century, the German Empire chemical industry was very developed and this country quickly became a world leader for chemistry and could swiftly develop the chemical weapons that evolved all along the war. Before WW1 started, France also created a suffocating grenade. Yet, at that time, chemical weapons are also being developed and shells filled with sulfur oxide, picric acid or chlorine were used by headquarters.
